While planning my son's 6th birthday in August 2024, I found myself DMing, calling, texting vendors, and searching through website after website trying to find the right options for our party. Charleston has so many incredible local businesses offering bounce houses, face painting, balloon décor, cakes, soft play, entertainers, and more, but there wasn't one place where I could browse everything, compare options, and book the services I needed. The more I planned, the more I realized how fragmented and chaotic the process was.
I have always enjoyed solving problems and building systems that make things easier. Before starting One Party Rental, I spent nearly a decade helping grow a Charleston-based consumer products company from selling at local artisan markets to a multi-million-dollar business. That experience gave me the confidence to recognize when there was an opportunity to improve an industry and the knowledge to turn an idea into a real business.
I remember mentioning the idea to my husband and saying I wanted to move forward and build something for us. I knew that if I didn't build it, I'd be kicking myself a few years later when someone else did. That was enough motivation to start taking the first steps.
One of the first things I did was come up with a name. To my surprise, One Party Rental was available everywhere. The domain names were open, the social media handles hadn't been claimed, and I was able to file for a trademark. None of those things guaranteed success, of course, but they felt like small signs that I should keep moving forward.
From there, the real work began. I had the opportunity to work with some incredibly talented companies while building my previous employer, and I was fortunate enough to partner with several of them again to help bring One Party Rental to life. Even with that experience, building a multi-vendor marketplace turned out to be far more complex than I expected. There were countless decisions to make, problems to solve, and plenty of mistakes along the way. Looking back, I'm grateful for every one of them because each challenge helped shape the platform into something better. I also can't say enough about our development team at Arctic Leaf. They have consistently gone above and beyond, thinking through long-term solutions and helping us build a platform that can continue to grow alongside our vendors and customers.
Interestingly, One Party Rental doesn't look exactly like the business I originally imagined. My first concept focused primarily on party rentals and services, but as I met with local vendors, business owners, and industry professionals, the vision became much clearer. Again and again, the conversations came back to kids' birthday parties and the need for a simpler way for families to discover and book local vendors. Those conversations ultimately shaped the marketplace you see today.
We're still learning, and we always will. Every vendor who joins the platform, every customer who books a party, and every conversation we have teaches us something new. My goal has never been to build just another website. I want to create a marketplace that genuinely helps local businesses grow while making birthday party planning easier for families in Charleston and, eventually, many other communities.
Thank you for being here. Whether you're a parent looking for birthday party ideas, a customer planning your next celebration, or a local vendor considering joining One Party Rental, I'm excited to have you be part of what we're building.
